In England, the question on luxury soon focused on the problems of the bourgeoise, while in France, the persistence of monarchy forced a constant confrontation between both types, making it difficult to take a stand. In the XIX th century in England Oscar Wilde – the leader of aesthetic movement proclaimed luxury in all his works, especially in his famous novel “Portrait of Dorian Gray”/ In all the descriptions the author praised luxury: “The sky was pure opal now, and the roofs of the houses glistened like silver against it. From some chimney opposite a thin wreath of smoke was rising. It curled, a violet riband, through the nacre-coloured air. In the huge gilt Venetian lantern, spoil of some Doge’s barge that hung from the ceiling of the great, oak-panelled hall of entrance, light

He turned them out and, having thrown his hat and cape on the table, passed through the library towards the door of his bedroom, a large octagonal chamber on the ground floor that, in his new-born feeling for luxury, he had just had decorated for himself and hung with some curious Renaissance tapestries that had been discovered stored in a disused attic at Selby Royal”1. Nowadays the notion luxury reveals different things, though the phenomenon remains unique. The modern market contains many different goods and services. Usually there are many different companies producing the same goods or services. They have different quality and price. But why do we need so big variety of the same things? The answer is simple - we are all different, we have different needs and views on the world: some people are demure, some people like drive, another likes sitting at home and reading books, some people like beautiful things, someone like the beauty of untouched nature etc. According to the lifestyle, character, purposes, some people work hard and become successful, some people work less and live in a small way and like this way of living. It is fairly, that people, who work hard, demand something special that unsuccessful people won’t be able to get. These things are called luxury. They expensive, most of them unique and of course they are high quality. It also applies to the service sector. Many people think that luxury is always connected with money. If you have money you can afford luxury goods, services or anything you want. But what is luxury?
First and foremost, only those who have much money can afford luxury. If we talk about luxury we run into luxury goods. This can involve expensive jewellery, designer clothes, top-of-the range cars, luxury homes and so on. As a rule those goods are of high quality, they are sold exclusively and they are unique. Furthermore, luxury can be connected not only with goods but also with services such as exotic holidays in five star hotels, cosmetic surgery and other kinds of services. Luxury can also be connected with influential friends. Developing this idea it is important to say that, by and large, having a friend who is a “bigwig” can be helpful to achieve a certain goal and to buy more luxury. Furthermore, some people put luxury and success together as synonyms. Mostly it is because success and luxury are connected with money. However, being a successful person doesn’t always mean that you should possess a great amount of luxury.
What makes a successful person? Why does he deserve luxury things? First of all, to become successful you need a special looks: you must understand clearly that being successful is your lifestyle, achieving goals would be usual for you; you should feel drive reaching your goal. Secondly, you should feel confident: you are a lucky man, you have a charisma to make your dream real. Thirdly, you must know what facilities you would have, what you would do in your free time, which house or flat you need and so on. Being successful means having a high level of living standards, require a great deal about yourself and give yourself a lot. But this is not necessarily a luxury, it is an opportunity to realize that dreams and wishes come true. I think luxury is such things which not everyone can afford to acquire. In different times luxury has different ways to be gained. Nevertheless, money rules the roost. There is a rich variety of market segments. So people who earn big money and afford luxury things. To have big money you should be a successful person. Today it doesn’t matter what way you earn money, it’s more important how much you earn. Successful people buy luxury things such as yachts, cars, homes, business and in a great number.
I am sure, we can’t earn “all the money of the world”. Of course, we have certain necessities of life, but the more we earn the more we want. Successful people should help others make life better. Moreover, they shouldn’t take care only about themselves. Everyone should realize such common things as who we are, what we can do for people and how to do this. Besides, luxury just separates people into social groups. Therefore, it’s more important what kind of person you are than how rich you are. It is interesting that in American culture those luxury goods are called “Bling Bling” because of the sound that they let out but in my point of view they are useless.
Furthemore, when we talk about luxury, we immediately imagine splendid, huge house on the coast with many fine cars near by. People believe that luxury is when somebody can afford something special other people don’t have. It can be the indicator of an individual’s level of success. But luxury is not only such things as domestic help, expensive clothes and cars, exotic holidays as many people think. A small flat is a big luxury for homeless as well as hearing is luxury for deaf. We can give many examples, but it is clear that luxury is something valuable and this value is just different for different people. For me luxury is something adding to my everyday life but not absolutely necessary. And in my opinion, it mustn’t be the necessity but there are categories of people who often abuse their money to be distinguished by their expensive things just to make a splash. May be they are not successful or even clever, they can just waste their parents’ money. Скрыть
