"Masquerade" - a romantic drama in tragical destiny of the conceiving hero, in its unsuccessful attempts to overcome the fatal loneliness.
The romantic hero - Arbenin - is represented in a secular household environment. All life of a secular society - a masquerade where there is no place to original feelings where under a mask of outage decency and secular decency defect, intrigues is veiled, slander, treachery and debauchery. At the heart of an image Arbenin, not defect and virtue opposition, and dialectics of kind and harms, collision of the divine and diabolical has begun. Показать всеp, treachery, an intrigue) is necessary for Lermontov for transformation of a melodramatic plot into a scene of an is social-philosophical romantic drama. Having married Nina casually, Arbenin meaningly breaks off with the past. Nina revives in him hope of possibility of divine harmony here, on the earth, belief in justice of a world order. Love ofr Arbenin is possibility of overcoming of a situation of dissonance with the world, reconciliation pledge good luck. But Arbenin itself becomes object of trite "experiment" of secular crowd. It is proud saying that «to me late before them bend», the hero fine understands, that light wishes to enslave it, realises, that it, as well as other conceiving people, «to the earth our century has bent down ». Its unique weapon - scepticism, a life he considers «for a long time famous as a charade for exercise of children». Arbenin is the tragical hero: after all, doubting everything, he is convinced of omnipotence of the reason, omniscience, in the right to destroy all barriers between good and breaking. However the proud individualist has appeared in a trap put by secular gossipers and intriguers. Abhoring visual environment Arbenin becomes the involuntary accomplice of its low-standard intrigue, the murderer of not guilty wife. Lermontov has created the variant of workson an eternal theme of jealousy, but character and its "Othello" acts are conditioned by a secular environment In Arbenin the writer for the first time has created an image of the person of the generation domesticly resisting to absolute power of the social environment, but capable to become only "executioner" of people close and liking it. Arbenin is given in a drama as the rebel rebelling against hypocrisy of a society surrounding it. Arbenin pressing forward to an ideal, thirst of human love, renovation nevertheless were saved. In its love to Nina «belief seeds» during a life and people are concluded. But he is poisoned by disbelief poison; the society despised by it nevertheless has left on its mark. So the enlightenment (imaginary) is tragic for it; the hero revenges not only for the deceived illusions, the defiled honour, the destroyed happiness. It revenges for the scolded ideal, for wreck of the hopes of renovation. In this aspect the "Masquerade" scene we correlate to "Othello" of Shakespeare. Arbenin wishes to revenge for the scolded belief, beauty, harmony. Now for it «a barrier destroyed between good and breaking», «all is authorised to it». It assigns to himself mission of the superperson, the superior court and punishment right. The adjudicating own selection Arbenin leads to its tragical error. Pressing forward to clear Nina of a sin and by death to return it divine purity turns around a crime, murder of the innocent wife. Arbenin poisons Nina, but it not simply payment for change (which actually was not). Thereupon the image of the Unknown person is extremely important. In one site, it has lines of the real person, with another - personifies a mystical satanic host. It, as Iga from Shakespeare, leads Arbenin to murder, showing revenge of darkness for pressing forward to light. It is hypothetically possible to claim, what exactly the Unknown person (lines under a mask) is the symbolical organizer of a secular intrigue (for example, it is characteristic, that on a point when the Unknown person sees how Arbenin Арбенин pours poison into ice-cream, it does not prevent murder). However it is absolutely clear, that wages overtake Arbenin not in «pleasure by defect», and at the moment of rest and happiness.
High values are characteristic for Othello. It cannot be reconciled with change, insincerity and lies. Not having neither good education, nor high position from a birth, Othello represents an example of highly moral hero. For him the truth is on the first place. William Shakespeare through hero Othello confutes old concepts that the person of the high rank can be the tragical hero only, for example the tsar or the king, or a mythical being. It was necessary, that only they capable on true high feelings. But if to look at Othello it in contrast with many other heroes of tragedy he is the only who can feel these highest feelings. This theory also is confuted by the fact, that the protagonist is the moor. Colour of its skin at all was not by then acknowledgement of a subtlety of its nature. Shakespeare completely breaks those stereotypes on which the person can be characterised behind race or a nationality. Скрыть
